Center for Teaching and Learning Philosophy

My philosophy for a teaching and learning center is to find out what a faculty member’s teaching philosophy is and, together, we explore ways in which he or she can improve and strengthen his teaching within his comfort zone.   It is important also for faculty to have the skills and mentoring to discover tools they can use to reach diverse learners.  An example is to work with faculty teams to write grants to engage students in research and scholarship activities.  Finally it is important for teaching and learning centers to be the heart of Academic Affairs working with administration, deans, and chairs to create a campus wide culture of teaching and learning.

Goals and objectives:

  • Work with departments to develop signature programs that integrate research, internships, and community engagement into the curriculum
  • Certify contingent faculty, teaching assistants and full time faculty to be master teachers and mentors
  •  Integrate technology supported learning to extend learning beyond the classroom walls, to provide affordable and diverse textbooks and materials, and model skills and knowledge to prepare graduates to fit  into the 21st Century professional workforce
  • Organize teams to write winning grant proposals that can fund the extra activities that make special programs happen
  • Explore new technologies that engage faculty with students and involve students with students anytime. anywhere
  • Create communities of practice for current issues in teaching, research in learning, and innovation
  • Create venues for faculty to network and mentor each other for publishing and other scholarly activities
  • Foster faculty career development to earn promotion and tenure:  scholarship, publishing, and research
